This lens is by no means a cheap optic. Indeed, the Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S is the most expensive Nikkor Z lens to date. However, for your money, you get something small, compact, flexible and well-suited to a number of different subjects. If you’re in any way interested in wide-angle photography, whether that be landscapes, architecture or anything else, it’s well worth the investment and comes highly recommended.
Sigma is working on developing Z-mount lenses!

William Brawley: I have another question: Have there been any plans to make lenses in Canon RF or the Nikon Z-mount?
Kazuto Yamaki: We are still checking their systems, and it’s a bit too early to make comment. But right now, we’re checking the compatibility between our lenses and their mount adapter. We already know that it works almost perfectly, but in some specific settings and [for some] operations, our lens does not work perfectly [with their adapter yet], like continuous burst mode…
Dave Etchells: …and some particular focus settings, or whatever.
Kazuto Yamaki: Yeah, yeah. So our software engineer is now checking all the details, and if he finds some minor issues, we’ll solve it.
Dave Etchells: Yeah, you solve it and you do a firmware update on the lens to fix that.
Kazuto Yamaki: Right. But at the same time, we are looking at their system.
Yes Tamron confirms “it has a plan” to make Nikon Z mount lenses
In a recently released Dpreview interview Tamron said this confirmed they are working on makin Z-mount autofocus lenses:
Yes, we’re also looking at that area. We have to do a lot of research and development into the reverse engineering, because they don’t disclose the details of their systems, so it’s a really hard job for us.

Conclusion: A great choice for Nikon Z adopters
The new wider Z-mount with its shorter register means that there’s a lot more flexibility for the optical engineers when designing lenses. Although the benefits derived from this are usually more applicable to wide-angle designs, there has been a noticeable improvement in terms of optical quality over the Nikkor’s F-mount predecessor. Whether that’s due to the more complex optical design or the greater freedom enabled by the mount—or both—is best known to Nikon. Certainly the new lens is more expensive than the F-mount version, but it’s all relative: after all, it is exceptionally sharp and a very good all-round performer. Even wide-open, it comes close to some of the best and most expensive lenses currently available, so in our opinion, the Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S offers an exceptionally good balance between price and prowess.
